Both days were really good. I spent a lot of time with my teacher, and also visited the language arts, science and math classes. Yesterday I went to eat lunch with students in the cafeteria. I got to talk with a little boy who told me that he did not sleep much last night because he had to take care of his baby sister who is 6 month years old. Today I joined lunch with five other female teachers on the floor. They talked about salary and striking the whole time. I asked them about my student (nickname: Star) and learned that his dad just committed suicide last Christmas. One of the teacher was really nice, she gave me a photocopy of his self-reflective paper.
We just finished the movie 1776. We had a discussion about the movie. It was good. I admire how much my teacher knows about the content and has passion in sharing it with others. We also went to a history teachers’ weekly meeting today. It was really interesting to experience another part of the job other than teaching. They each received a big rubric and needed to provide enough evidence to prove they are excellent teachers. It seems like a lot for them. One of the teacher even spoke up and said, “I have to admit this is distracting me from doing what I am supposed to do. I would rather spend the meeting time talking about curriculum and resources with you all.” My teacher commented, “This can be also a positive thing. Sometimes when I collect what I am doing with students, I get more ideas from reviewing those assessments.” I truly really respect people who can turn around a situation and find the positive things in whatever they are doing or told to do.
I went in Ms. Holland’s science class today. It was very interesting too. The teacher used a dating game to engage with students on a chemistry topic. This activity involved interactive Powerpoint, working sheet, blackboard writing, and class sharing. I definitely saw that learning was happening in that classroom.
I also spent 45 minutes with my Star on reading today. I picked a book called “Fighting the ground” about a 13 years-old boy in Revolutionary war. He read out loud, then we paused and asked questions. It was a more fun and effective time than that online reading program.
My teacher told me that he will let me teach his lesson tomorrow after I watch him teaching for the first two blocks. I am looking forward to it.
I am really grateful for this experience so far, I am starting to admire my teacher as an individual. My students are including me as part of their family. I am surrounded by Love.
