Today is a short-period(20mins) day because everyone is going to watch a play. Mr. Stark spent almost the whole time continuing the conversations on ISIS, terrorism, school attack and pearl harbor. Later we played a game “family feud” together while reviewing the chapter we just learned last week. It’s interesting to see how the same game looked different in each block.
At 3rd block, Mr. Stark used his own personal story of being a teacher, talked about what was school like when he was a 7th grader. They didn’t lock doors. He also let me share what a Chinese school looks like. Those kids had so many questions. So we did not get into reviewing chapter 6.
At Block 4, we had someone sitting in on the class (someone from administration). I do not know why he was here. But we didn’t talk about anything else other than reviewing chapter 4. I wonder why Mr. Stark chose not to have the same conversation.
We have a house meeting at a prepared time (each floor is a house). It was very interesting. The meeting started with a social worker giving a talk on trans & gender- expansive clients issue. He pointed out that it is not just a hot social topic, it actually can be a legal issue in schools. There was a lawsuit on this topic at a high school nearby. Teachers didn’t give much input. The principal spoke up and said, “I want to protect you guys. Please ask for help if you don’t know how to handle this.” The second part of the meeting was all about discipline. They went over each student and share insights. It was not hard to tell, how this school is running on the first and second level. It’s all about punishment and reward. The last part was about classroom management assessment sheet. I thought it was interesting to see how specific requirements they have for students, such as “feet on floor, back to seat, walk in/out quietly” I wonder how effective it is for students to have clear direction, instead of letting them think through what is the right thing to do.
I finally can just sit back and observe. It was like a holiday todayJ
Thank you for all the good comments you gave after the lessons!
