I taught Mandarin Chinese today. The kids were all very interested in learning a new language. They also had a lot of questions about life in China. I feel grateful for being a channel and giving them a glimpse of the world out there.
I also had interviews with the principal and a social worker. Here are some highlight notes from the conversations.
Principal: We define success as developing a whole child: academically, socially and emotionally. The most challenged thing at your job now is adapting to a new evaluation model. If there is one thing I could change, I would like to have 100% parent involvement. Because some of our students are coming from not good families, we have to take on the role of the parents.
Social Work: Mainly I work with children who have behavior issues, low self-esteem, anger problem, etc. We have, in total, five social workers, so we are actually only able to spend 20 minutes with each individual per week. But the administration has been very supportive in our work. She has three self-harming cases so far this semester and an average three family abuse cases per week.
It was also very nice to get together after lunch. When I was listening to everyone, I thought, how sweet a group of teachers they are! I think we did exactly what we hoped to do – Let, Love, Teach. I can’t wait to move to the last stage of this block experience.
